Why she rocks: As a child my family dealt with the loss of many family members in the physical forms of abandonment or death and the emotional forms of depression and addiction. It was my mother who comforted me every night with the pinky promise she would never leave me. It became a little ritual, “Mommy never leave, Cheyanne never leave.”

As a child, that promise meant stability and safety. She showed me that I would never be alone and proved to me that everything would be okay as long as we had each other. All the while teaching me love, compassion, strength, empathy and resilience for others and myself.

As an adult I see my side to that promise - I must never abandon who I am and who she taught me to be. I must always take care of that little girl she loved so much even when I feel the most unlovable, most vulnerable and most insecure. I now understand how easy it is to lose yourself in heartbreak, negativity and sadness and lose sight of your self worth but our promise will always stick in my mind and lead me back to the values, safety and stability she gave to me.

We never break pinky promises. Thank you mom for making me who I am. If it is a quarter of the woman you are, I will be just fine.
