Drunk Woman Crashed Her Car on Southern State With 2 Kids Inside: Police

The 27-year-old woman and an 8-year-old child suffered minor injuries in the single-car crash Sunday night, police say.

NORTH BABYLON, NY – A 27-year-old woman was drunk when she crashed her car with two children inside on the Southern State Parkway Sunday night, injuring herself and an 8-year-old child, state police said.

Holly Herlich, of Bellport, is charged with aggravated DWI (a felony under Leandra's Law), endangering the welfare of a child and traffic violations.

According to police, troopers were dispatched to a report of a rollover crash on the westbound Southern State Parkway east of Exit 39–Route 231 at about 9:40 p.m.

Upon arrival on the scene, a trooper observed a Hyundai Elantra on the right shoulder of the roadway. The driver, Herlich, was outside of the vehicle, along with two children, ages 8 and 1, police said.

While the trooper was interviewing Herlich, the trooper detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage, police said.

Herlich failed sobriety tests and was subsequently arrested for DWI, police said.

Herlich and her 8-year-old passenger were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip to be treated for minor injuries. The 1-year-old passenger was not injured and was later turned over to the custody of a family member.

Police did not specify the relationship between Herlich and the children or the genders of the children.

Herlich was given an appearance ticket returnable to First District Court in Central Islip on Friday, Nov. 25.
