N. Babylon Soccer Play Named Stony Brook University's First All-American

After becoming Stony Brook men's soccer's first-ever All-American last week, senior midfielder Leonardo Fernandes, from North Babylon, picked up two more honors.

Over the weekend, Fernandes was named to the College Soccer News All-America third team and was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Northeast Region first team.

Last Friday, Fernandes was named to the NSCAA All-America second team.

The senior had an outstanding 2012 season, in whcih he scored nine goals and assisted on seven others for a total of 25 points. Five of his nine goals were game-winners, and he assisted on game-winning goals three times. He was named 2012 America East Midfielder of the Year and first-team All-America East. He was also named to the America East Championship All-Tournament team for his outstanding play in helping the Seawolves reach the semifinals for the fourth consecutive season.

Stony Brook men's soccer's most decorated student-athlete, Fernandes wrapped up his Stony Brook career as the program's all-time leader in points with 79. He also is third in goals (31) and third in assists (17), and he ranks first in the program's Div. I history in each category. He is a three-time America East Midfielder of the Year and first-team All-America East recipient. He also previously was named first-team NSCAA All-Northeast Region in 2011 and third-team NSCAA All-Northeast Region in 2010.

Fernandes is currently a candidate for the Soccer News Net College Boot Award, given to the top player in collegiate soccer. Fan voting, which runs until Dec. 22, accounts for 40 percent of the total vote. Fans can vote for Fernandes here.
