North Babylon Student Cellist Receives SCMEA Scholarship

NORTH BABYLON, NY — A North Babylon High School student is being recognized for her outstanding musical abilities.

Leyla Petit was was presented with a 2022 Suffolk County Music Educators’Association Scholarship for summer study, the North Babylon Union Free School District announced on Wednesday.

Leyla, a cellist, was honored as a recipient of the I. Scott Hamor Memorial Scholarship after being nominated by her teacher, Nicole Verderosa.

She officially received her scholarship during the SCMEA All-County Music Festival concert, which took place from March 11 to 13.

In addition, 41 North Babylon music students were also selected and performed during the concerts as well. To be chosen for this prestigious honor, students in grades 5 to 10 must score among the top NYSSMA musicians across Suffolk County and have top recommendations from their school music teacher.
