North Babylon Student Named 2022 Coca-Cola Scholar

Michael Fuentes was one out of 68,000 applicants to win the $20,000 college scholarship.

NORTH BABYLON, NY —A North Babylon student has been named a winner in the 2022 Coca-Cola Scholars Program.

Michael Fuentes, a senior at North Babylon High School, was selected among 150 students nationwide to receive the $20,000 college scholarship, the district announced on Thursday.

More than 68,000 applicants and 1,617 semifinalists nationwide participated in the scholarship program.

Before he was selected, Michael advanced to the regional finalist level of the competition and participating in a 20-minute interview with the program’s regional interview committee.

Michael earned his title by showcasing his leadership skills, academic achievements and community service, the district said.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation was founded in 1986 to commemorate the company's centennial. Since then, its mission is to provide scholarship programs and lifelong enrichment opportunities "in support of exceptional peoples’ thirst for knowledge and their desire to make a difference in the world."
