North Babylon UFSD partners with Long Island Explorium

Students in the North Babylon Union Free School District are partnering with the Long Island Explorium for a science fellowship program. The program provides science enrichment opportunities for students and offers a paid summer fellowship within the district during the summer of 2021.

Students in grades seven through 12 can volunteer to participate in a series of 10
enrichment sessions. The enrichment sessions are virtual and focus on different STEM
topics each week. For example, during the session on Tuesday, May 4, students focused on
engineering. After a quick lesson and presentation, students were given a hands-on
challenge. Using provided materials, students built their own “roller coasters.” The goal
was to create tracks to design a safe, but fun, pathway for a marble to travel.

Juniors or seniors who participate in the enrichment sessions are eligible for the
summer fellowship. After an interview and application process, two students and one
alternate will be selected. The fellowship will offer the selected students a salary to conduct
a 40-hour summer STEM-Maker camp to second through fifth grade students in the district.
The 10 enrichment sessions the students participated in with the Long Island Explorium
will serve as trainings to help teach the younger students about STEM topics and activities
throughout the summer camp.
