Man Tries To Kill Girlfriend Before Hanging Himself: Police

BAYWOOD, NY – A man critically injured his girlfriend before hanging himself on Long Island Monday morning, police said.

Suffolk County Police responded to a call at about 11:30 a.m. to check on the welfare of residents at 20 Washington Ave. in Baywood, an industrial area just south of Heartland Golf Park and around the block from the Deer Park Long Island Rail Road station.

When officers arrived, they found 48-year-old Edvin Sorto Gomez dead from a self-inflicted wound. Gomez's girlfriend, who police did not name, was found injured in the home. The 57-year-old woman was transported to a local hospital where she was in critical condition, police said.

Following an investigation by Homicide Squad detectives, it was determined that Gomez injured his girlfriend and then hung himself, police said.
