‘Snow’ Much Fun At Marion G. Vedder Elementary School

Students took part in press conference training and leadership workshops through a statewide youth institute.

NORTH BABYLON, NY — Prekindergarten students at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School had a “snow” much fun during a special snowflake celebration held Jan. 23 in the North Babylon School District.

The winter-themed event offered a hands-on learning experience as students rotated through engaging activity stations focused on creativity, fine motor development and early STEM skills.

As students moved from station to station, they were encouraged to explore, problem-solve and work together while enjoying festive winter activities. At one station, children practiced hand-eye coordination by tossing soft “snowballs” into a bucket, cheering each other on as they aimed for the target.

Another station focused on strengthening fine motor skills, where students used tongs to carefully pick up snowballs and feed them to a friendly yeti — an activity requiring focus, control and patience.

In a STEM-based station, prekindergartners became young engineers as they designed and built their own snowflakes using marshmallows and toothpicks. The activity encouraged creativity and critical thinking as students experimented with shapes, structures and balance.

Students also expressed themselves at winter-themed coloring and art stations, creating festive pictures inspired by snowflakes and cold-weather scenes.

School officials said the snowflake celebration was designed to support early childhood development by blending play with purposeful learning, helping students strengthen academic and social skills while enjoying a joyful winter experience.
