Teen Fires Gun, Slashes Person At Long Island LA Fitness: Police

Several witnesses called 911 to report an active shooter at the gym. Three gym members held the gunman until cops arrived, police say.

NORTH BABYLON, NY — Police have identified an 18-year-old who they say fired a gun and slashed another teen in the neck at a Long Island LA Fitness gym Tuesday night.

Noah Haynes, 18, of Wyandanch, is charged with second degree assault, first degree reckless endangerment, managing, and second degree criminal possession of a weapon.

According to police, Haynes and a 17-year-old male got into a verbal altercation at about 7:15 p.m. inside the LA Fitness at 1230 Deer Park Ave. in North Babylon. Staff members of the gym asked them to leave the building.

The two then engaged in a physical altercation in the parking lot, police said. Haynes eventually left the parking lot in a car, police said, and the 17-year-old returned to the gym.

According to police, Haynes returned about 30 minutes later, entered the building, and confronted the 17-year-old in the locker room. Haynes slashed the teen in the neck with a metal object, police said, and pointed a handgun at him.

The two left the locker room and began to fight in the gym area. The 17-year-old yelled to other people in the gym that Haynes had a gun, police said. Three gym members intervened and held Haynes down until police arrived. Haynes fired one shot during the struggle, police said, but no one was struck by the bullet. Several witnesses called 911 at 7:50 p.m. to report an active shooter, police said, and officers placed Haynes in custody at about 7:55 p.m.

The 17-year-old was transported to a local hospital, treated for minor injuries, and released, police said.

Haynes is scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday.
