West Babylon Senior Creates 9/11 Banner To Teach Peace, Unity

WEST BABYLON, NY — A West Babylon High School senior is helping younger students honor the victims and heroes of Sept. 11 while passing along lessons of peace, kindness and unity ahead of the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

Senior Lia DeGennaro created a special 9/11 banner for display at John F. Kennedy Elementary School, where her mother, Lisa DeGennaro, teaches.

Throughout the week, John F. Kennedy Elementary School students participated in age-appropriate lessons and activities centered on peace, kindness and unity.

Teachers used the anniversary to help students understand the importance of caring for others, supporting their community and recognizing the everyday heroes who make a difference.

Lia designed the banner to honor the significance of Sept. 11 while creating something that could become part of the elementary school’s learning experience. With her mother teaching at the school, the project also held personal meaning.

“I wanted to create something that would serve as a reminder of Sept. 11 and help connect the day to the lessons the students were learning,” Lia said.
