6-Year-Old Ejected From Car After Her Drunk Aunt Crashes Into Pole, Parked Vehicles: Police

A woman and two children are hospitalized following Christmas Day crash on Long Island.

BAY SHORE, NY - A 6-year-old girl was ejected from a car when her drunk aunt crashed into a utility pole and parked vehicles in Bay Shore Friday afternoon, police said.

According to police, 25-year-old Latanya Mowatt, of Deer Park, was driving a 2004 Nissan Maxima southbound on Brookdale Avenue when she apparently lost control of the vehicle, and struck a pole and two unoccupied parked vehicles just north of Bay Shore Road around 4:30 p.m.

The Nissan then overturned and Mowatt’s 6-year-old niece was ejected, police said. Mowatt’s 8-year-old daughter was also injured in the crash.

Mowatt and the two girls were transported by ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. Mowatt and her daughter suffered non-life threatening injuries. The 6-year-old girl suffered serious internal injuries, police said.

Mowatt was arrested and charged with aggravated DWI–a felony under Leandra’s Law–DWI and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
