A Cornstalk Grows in Brooklyn

Neighbor shares a story and pics of a Ditmas Park vegetable/floral garden.

Not only do cornstalks grow in Brooklyn, but also brussel sprouts, pumpkin, tomatoes and peppers in the garden of Ditmas Park neighbor Amir Feratovic. Amir Feratovic came to this country 21 years ago from Yugoslavia with his family and his love of the earth and the beauty of it's harvest. And on the little patch of ground that surrounds the building of which he is the superintendent, he has created a garden that has a mix of the floral with sunflowers, rose of sharon, rhododendrons, as well as a bountiful harvest of vegetables. Amir has been creating this garden now for the past 6 years and each year it has grown, with this year the front yard being a well guarded fortress with cornstalk sentinels. It is real pleasure to see the fruits of the earth and the love that has been put into this endeavor. You will find this local wonder on East 17th Street and Dorchester Road. With these heavy hot days I suggest going either in the cool morning or at dusk.
