Ditmas Park Neighbors in Mermaid Parade and More
Album from the Mermaid Parade including pics of Ditmas Park neighbors walking in parade.
This year the Mermaid Parade was the big 30 and looking good for it's age. Lots of color, glitter and imagination goes into putting together the costumes for this event. And citizens from the little neck of the woods called Ditmas Park strutted their stuff in the parade this year. They didn't wear signs, but I spotted them in the hood getting ready to head towards the parade, and as luck would have it I got an opportunity to shoot them sashaying their Ditmas Park pride down the boardwalk.
The weather was perfect for the parade with lower temperatures, a lot less humidity and an awesome breeze, which made it optimum conditions for the long wait to watch the parade go by. The procession starts on Surf Avenue with floats and Merry revelers and then eventually the non-vehicular floats and the fishy folk make it up to the boardwalk at around West 8th Street and walk down towards MCU Park. The parade was filled with music, mermaids dancing the lindy, juggling, merpeople on stilts and the usual partial nudity which has become synonymous with the Mermaid Parade. Occupy Wall Street was there along with Captain America, Queen Elizabeth I, Max from Where The Wild Things Are, Cleopatra being pulled on her bark by burly men (of course don't we all), a real newlywed couple, there were the Mermageddans predicting the end of the world this year, and of course there were countless assorted jellyfish, pirates and fishtails of every variety.
