Girl Hit By Van In Flatbush Street, Police Say

The girl, who is about 10-years-old, is in critical condition after being hit by a van on Utica and Church avenues Tuesday morning.

FLATBUSH, BROOKLYN — A girl is in critical condition after being hit by a van a Brooklyn street Tuesday morning, officials said.

The girl, aged 10 or 11, was crossing the street near Utica and Church avenues around 7:40 a.m. when she was struck by a van, police said.

Witness Byron A. Lee, 48, saw the little girl dressed, in a school uniform and carrying a backpack, when she was struck by the van.

"She walked in front of the van because she was distracted," said Lee. "She fell down on the ground and the van ran over her body."

The little girl was unconscious when emergency responders arrived at the scene, he said.

"She wasn't awake," he said, but was unable to describe her injuries. "I was upset."

Emergency responders rushed the girl to Kings County Hospital in critical condition, said the FDNY.

The driver remained on the scene and the investigation remains ongoing, police said.
