Kosher Korean Cooking Class Debuts May 12

Learn How to Make Kimchi, Banchan, Bibimbap and more This and many more "NightShul" class offerings at EMJC in May

Brooklyn, NY, May 12, 2016 — NightShul, the growing learning community at the East Midwood Jewish Center, located at 1625 Ocean Avenue in Brooklyn, debuts its first cooking class on Thursday, May 12 at 7:00 pm. Come be part of this growing community, make friends, learn and have fun. The learning opportunities for May 12, 19, and 26 include:

Kosher Korean Cooking taught by Jinah Park Kamil

A three-week progression of classes, each building on the techniques of the previous week.

Week 1: Kimchi Making

Week 2: Banchan & Bap (Rice) Making

Week 3: Bibimbap and Doenjang-Guk (Soybean Paste Soup).

Rashi and His Methodology taught by Cantor Sam Levine

This 11th century French rabbi set the standard for biblical exegesis (commentary). To this day, there is no traditional Jewish bible that is printed without his commentary. Through looking at a selection of Rashi’s commentaries, we will get an insight into the great scholar’s methodology and learn to ask “what’s troubling Rashi?”

Selected Shorts from the Tanakh taught by Rabbi Sue Oren

Each week we will read and discuss one of these gems from the Tanakh: Song of Songs, Ruth and Jonah. We will discuss each text from multiple perspectives: its thematic and literary merits, classical and contemporary midrash, its liturgical placement in the Jewish calendar year, and our own personal responses.

Lev Tahor: Mindfulness Practice in Jewish Culturetaught by Rabbi Sara Zacharia

Introduction to Jewish Meditation through niggun(song), kavanah (intention), guided meditation, silence and study. This course is open to the novice and seasoned practitioner. Our weekly meeting will be learning techniques dedicated to quieting the mind from our daily distractions, and opening ourselves up to deep engagement with the self and with the weekly text.

Come try a night for $15 or the full month for $35. Those interested in the Kosher Korean Cooking class must sign up for the full month, additional materials fee of $30 applies, class is limited to 10 participants. All NightShul admission includes wine and cheese social hours starting at 7:00 PM and an hour to an hour and a half of learning starting at 8:00. Our final class each month features an after-party.
