NYC To Conduct Overnight Mosquito Control Treatments In Manhattan

NEW YORK CITY — The New York City Health Department will conduct targeted truck-based mosquito control treatments in parts of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens next week as part of ongoing efforts to reduce adult mosquito populations and the risk of West Nile virus.

Manhattan will be treated Monday, Sept. 21, from 11:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday. If weather prevents the operation, it will take place Tuesday, Sept. 22, during the same hours. A second treatment covering parts of Brooklyn and Queens is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 23, from 8:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday, with Thursday, Sept. 24, as the alternate date.

The Health Department will use truck-mounted equipment to apply Duet, an EPA-registered mosquito control product. The department said pesticide risks are low for people and pets, though sensitive individuals may experience temporary eye or throat irritation or a mild rash. People with respiratory conditions may wish to stay indoors during treatment.

New Yorkers can reduce mosquito exposure by using EPA-registered insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants outdoors, maintaining window and door screens, and eliminating standing water around homes.
