NEW YORK CITY — Hudson River Park has announced a full lineup of science, sustainability and family-friendly events along the waterfront this fall, offering New Yorkers opportunities to explore local wildlife, participate in hands-on activities and support the park's environmental programs.
The schedule begins with the Oyster Field Lab on Thursday, October 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the Pier 40 Wetlab at West Houston Street.
The hands-on program will introduce participants to live oysters and their role as ecosystem engineers in Hudson River restoration.
Wetlab Look-ins will take place Tuesdays and Wednesdays through October 28 from 3 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays through October 24 from 11 a.m.–5 p.m. at Pier 40, with drop-in tours featuring local wildlife including oyster toadfish, lined seahorses and blue crabs. There will be no Wetlab program on October 10.
The park will host Green Team Volunteer Days on Saturday, October 24, and Saturday, November 14, beginning at 10 a.m. at various locations throughout the park, with volunteers helping with gardening, planting and other stewardship activities.
On Wednesday, October 28, from 3 to 6 p.m., Release of the Fishes will take place at the Pier 40 Wetlab, giving visitors a chance to help return fish residents to the Hudson River and learn more about the city's waterways.
On Saturday, November 7, from 11 a.m.–3 p.m., Pumpkin Smash will take place at Pier 84 at West 44th Street. Visitors can bring their post-Halloween pumpkins to smash and turn into compost.
Ask a Scientist will follow on Thursday, November 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the Pier 57 Discovery Tank at West 15th Street, featuring a live question-and-answer session with scientists from the Secret Science Club.
The Discovery Tank Guided Gallery at Pier 57 will offer guided programming Thursdays and Fridays from 3 to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m.–5 p.m.
The gallery is open year-round through December 19 and features digital wildlife exhibits and hands-on STEM activities. There will be no programs October 10 or November 26–28.
