'Angry Women' Exhibition in Tribeca Features 80 Female Artists Fighting Back

The Untitled Space Gallery's newest exhibition speaks out against Trump and the country's current political climate.

TRIBECA, NY — The Untitled Space gallery in Tribeca presents their newest exhibition "Uprise/Angry Women," which features the work of 80 female artists responding to the most recent presidential election and the current social and political climate in America.

Curator Indira Cesarine said the gallery received a massive response from female artists all over the country regarding the exhibit, with over 1,800 submissions of artwork by over 400 artists.

The art chosen for "Angry Women" ranges from funny to dark to hopeful, but has an underlying theme: women from all over the country unsatisfied with Trump and what he stands for.

"Donald Trump with a Crown of Roadkill" was painted by Connecticut/New York artist Cara DeAngelis after the Access Hollywood tapes came out, where Trump's infamous "locker room" banter was heard. DeAngelis has a history of using roadkill in her paintings, and used this imagery as well as coating Trump's suit in a layer of black tar to symbolize corruption, greed and over-industrialization.

"I am committed to using my work as a means for social awareness and positive change, in addition to peaceful protest," DeAngelis said in a statement.

New York City artist Laura Murray is behind the painting "Plug It Up," which shows a woman's hand placing a tampon into a gun's muzzle. Murray says the painting reflects a memory of when she was held up at gunpoint in her apartment lobby four years ago.

"I envisioned all of the country's misogyny, all of the rising tension, and all of the potential for violence as a gun pointed at my face," Murray said in a statement. "I wondered, 'how can I respond in a way that is peaceful, powerful, and - most importantly - feminine?'"

The exhibit is presented in partnership with Era Coalition, a political organization that works to support passage and ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. A portion of the show's proceeds will go towards their organization Fund For Women's Equality, which works to raise awareness on gaps in the law that leave women without legal recourse from sex discrimination.

The exhibition is on view from Jan. 17-29, which perfectly coincides with the 44th anniversary of landmark abortion case Roe vs. Wade. There is an artist talk/panel discussion on the work from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 26. RSVP to events@untitled-space.com.
