Battery Bikeway Reopens After Completion Of Resiliency Project

NEW YORK CITY — The Battery Park City Authority, The Battery Conservancy, elected officials and community partners celebrated the completion of the South Battery Park City Resiliency Project during Climate Week.

The milestone was marked by the reopening of the Battery Bikeway, a dedicated cycling path connecting the Hudson River Greenway to the East River Esplanade, on Thursday, Sept. 24.

The bikeway runs through Battery Park City and is part of a 31-mile uninterrupted waterfront bicycle route around Manhattan.

“The work represents a vital and historic investment in downtown Manhattan – in its people, its infrastructure, and its public spaces," Battery Park City Authority Chair Don Capoccia said.

The resiliency project creates an integrated coastal flood protection system stretching from the Museum of Jewish Heritage through Wagner Park, Pier A Plaza and along the northern edge of The Battery.

Improvements include elevated park areas, flood walls and deployable gates, upgraded storm drainage, a stormwater retention cistern, new landscaping and a connection to the Battery Coastal Resilience Project.

Wagner Park, a 3.5-acre public space along the Hudson River, reopened last year following its reconstruction.

The renovated park includes new green space, a community venue and a rooftop garden with views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline.

The Battery Park City Authority has also begun work on the North/West Battery Park City Resiliency Project, which will extend flood protections from the Museum of Jewish Heritage to Greenwich Street in Tribeca.
