Woman Dies After Falling Off Escalator At Oculus World Trade Center: Police

The 29-year-old woman fell from the escalator when she was apparently attempting to grab something.

LOWER MANHATTAN, NY — A woman died after falling from an escalator inside the World Trade Center Oculus early Saturday morning as she was apparently trying to grab something, an NYPD spokeswoman told Patch.

The 29-year-old woman fell 30-feet from an escalator around 5:30 a.m. She was taken to Bellevue Hospital where she was pronounced deceased.

Law enforcement sources told the New York Daily News that the woman fell while trying to grab a hat her twin sister dropped. She was identified as Jennifer Santos, of Kearny, New Jersey. Her twin, Jessica, was treated for trauma but was uninjured, officials said.

The new mall and transportation hub to more than 13 subway trains and river ferries opened in August 2016. The building, which cost around $6 billion to build, was designed by Santiago Calatrava. The mall's real estate is owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and its retail space is owned by Westfield Properties.
