EAST ISLIP, NY — Residents, families and staff at Momentum at South Bay for Rehabilitation and Nursing gathered Thursday for the facility’s fourth annual “Celebration of Life” Butterfly Release.
Since its inception, the event has become a hallmark gathering at Momentum at South Bay, offering residents, loved ones and staff a moment to pause and honor life, organizers said.
The event has become a community tradition at the East Islip facility, bringing attendees together for an afternoon centered on reflection, renewal and shared connection.
The celebration began as attendees prepared butterflies sourced from a butterfly farm before gathering for the release. Organizers said the butterflies also serve as pollinators that can help support the local ecosystem.
“The Celebration of Life Butterfly Release is a therapeutically enriching experience that supports emotional well-being and fosters a sense of purpose for our residents,” said Jennifer Haug, director of recreational therapy at Momentum at South Bay for Rehabilitation and Nursing. “Seeing that impact play out in real time, year after year, is what makes this tradition so special to our entire community.”
