New East Islip Program Opens For Adults With Developmental Disabilities

EAST ISLIP, NY — People's Arc of Suffolk has opened a new community-based program location in East Islip for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the organization said.

The new "Program Without Walls" site, at 59 Garfield Ave., is part of the organization's expansion of programs designed to give participants more opportunities to take part in activities, volunteer work and other experiences within their local communities.

The East Islip site joins existing Program Without Walls locations in Northport, Sayville, Westhampton Beach and Bohemia. A sixth location is expected to open in Lake Grove in October, according to the organization.

The 4,000-square-foot, two-story East Islip building includes a main activity room, smaller spaces for group projects, offices, meeting areas and a reading corner. Artwork created by people who participate in the organization's programs is also displayed throughout the building.

"This new PWW location is really about reaching out into the community," said John McGuigan, CEO of People's Arc of Suffolk. "We want the people we support to have opportunities to build relationships, try new things, develop their skills and be active participants in the communities around them. We're excited to open these doors and become an even bigger part of the East Islip community."

The Program Without Walls initiative serves adults 21 and older with developmental disabilities. Participants take part in volunteer opportunities, recreational activities and programs involving local businesses, nonprofits and other community organizations.

People's Arc of Suffolk said its broader shift toward community-based programming is intended to provide participants with greater access to local resources and more opportunities for inclusion and engagement.

The organization also provides adult day services, children's programs, housing, vocational services, respite care and community habilitation for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
