EAST ISLIP, NY — Many senior students on Long Island were expecting to celebrate their final year with prom, graduation, and other milestone events. However, the coronavirus crisis has meant that dreams and long-awaited celebrations have been put on hold.

Patch would like to shine a light on these amazing young people and their accomplishments; a new series "Celebrate Your Senior," inviting proud parents and others to spotlight the young people whose accomplishments can't be derailed by the pandemic.

Kimberly Canas nominated her son, Joseph Canas, an East Islip High School 2020 graduate. He has been an East Islip Redmen varsity and JV football player throughout high school, and has played football in East Islip since the age of five.

While a Cadet with the USNSC, Joe has gone through many training programs, including Petty Officer, U.S. Naval History, U. S. Coast Guard Training, and many more, choosing to spend his long-awaited summers training for a future in the U. S. Military. Additionally, Joe has been an active member of St. Peter’s R.C. Church of Islip Terrace, serving as Altar Server and participating in many service events throughout the years. On July 21st, Joe will be flying out to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas to begin his career in the U. S. Air Force. We know his future is bright, and are so happy he is going to be living his dream. Our son has been such a blessing to his family, and we are so very proud of all he has accomplished, and of his commitment to serve our Country.
