Double Amputee, Acclaimed Wrestler Speaks At East Islip School

EAST ISLIP, NY — A local celebrity is continuing an annual tradition with East Islip Middle School students.

Rohan Murphy, East Islip alumni, acclaimed wrestler, powerlifter, and motivational speaker, visited the school's wrestling team on Feb. 17 to share his life's lessons and experiences.

At the age of four, Murphy was born with severe birth defects that resulted in the amputation of his legs. Nevertheless, he persevered with athletics and wrestling at East Islip, Penn State and beyond, becoming a success story and "inspiration" for all.

“Rohan comes back every year to speak with our wrestlers, and it’s always our favorite practice of the year,” said physical education teacher Ron Croteau, who convinced Murphy to try wrestling as a high school freshman.

Murphy has also spoken at numerous locations on the island, from schools to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility. He has even starred in a Nike Commercial.

“He is a truly an incredible and amazing man. He speaks about life, wrestling and demonstrates moves with our team," said Croteau. "Rohan answers so many questions from the kids. Just watching the wrestlers’ faces and reactions is priceless.”
