East Islip Students Take Science Class Into The Wild At Sunken Meadow

EAST ISLIP, NY — East Islip High School AP Environmental Science students recently took their lessons into the field during a visit to Sunken Meadow State Park.

Students in Lauren Ferlin’s class explored the biodiversity and ecological importance of the park’s salt marsh estuary, observing the plants and animals that make the ecosystem unique.

During the visit, students also learned about the role salt marshes play in protecting coastlines, improving water quality and providing critical habitat for wildlife and migrating species.

“There’s no better way to learn about the environment than to get out there and explore it,” Ferlin said.
