Reverence and Resistance is a choral concert that speaks to humanitarian questions of our time, featuring the treble-voice world premiere of Rumor Mill, an a cappella masterpiece about loss and longing in the Palestinian diaspora. Acclaimed poet Naomi Shihab Nye will read, and Accord Composer-in-Residence Shireen Abu-Khader will offer commentary.
The program puts music of protest side-by-side with music of praise: including a contemporary mass by Andre Caplet, a 13th-century chant reimagined by David Douglas, and a joyfully transporting piece by composer Cedrick Howoseb, in the Otjiherero language by way of Namibia, accompanied by djembe. Other works explore hope amidst oppression and celebrate the power of the individual to create change. All are welcome to a reception following the concert.
