All East Hampton Town 'Truck Beach'-Driving Permits Revoked

EAST HAMPTON, NY β€” The days of driving on Truck Beach in East Hampton are over, according to town officials.

According to East Hampton Town, on Feb. 3, 2021, a Supreme Court decision was made in a suit involving The Seaview at Amagansett, Ltd. versus the East Hampton Trustees, concluding that "the town lacked the authority to regulate certain 'beaches,' . . .through the issuance of town beach driving permits for the beach located between the easterly line of Napeague Lane as extended southerly to the mean high water line of the Atlantic Ocean and the westerly boundary of Napeague State Park and commonly, referred to as 'Truck Beach.'"

The town then told residents that general beach driving was no allowed on the property that was the subject of the litigation.

Next, on June 30, the Supreme Court, ordered the town clerk to revoke all beach driving permits issued by the town that violated the appellate division's order, officials said.

The town board voted unanimously at its last meeting to revoke all beach driving permits and said that "no beach driving permit issued by the town, either before this resolution or after it, gives the permit holder the right to drive on Truck Beach' and driving on 'Truck Beach' is prohibited."

In past months, fishermen and others have protested the measure.
