Flood Watch In Effect Across Long Island Through Late Monday: NWS

LONG ISLAND, NY — A flood watch is in effect across Long Island through late Monday night, according to the National Weather Service.

Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible, the NWS said. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations, the NWS said.

Multiple rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms through
Monday night will likely produce significant total rainfall of 2 to 3 inches, with locally higher amounts of 4 inches or more, the NWS said.

Hourly rainfall amounts up to 2 inches are possible; those conditions could lead to flash flooding, the NWS said.

The Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services offered safety tips:

- Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

- Stay away or be swept away. River banks and culverts can become unstable and unsafe.

- Please report observed flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement and request that they pass the information to the National Weather Service, when you can do so safely.
