1. Town Seeks To Acquire 38.3 Acres At Former Sand Mine In Wainscott For Preservation, Municipal Needs (patch.com) β East Hampton Town is proposing to buy 38.3 acres at a former Wainscott sand mine, dedicating most of it to open space and recreation while reserving five acres for future municipal needs. Officials say the plan would prevent intensive commercial-industrial development, build on recent preservation efforts, and transform the reclaimed site into a grassland meadow, with a public hearing set for October 15.

2. NextEra Halts East Hampton, Montauk Battery Plants Over Water Contamination (southshorepress.com) β Battery storage plants in East Hampton and Montauk have been shut down while NextEra removes a fire suppression chemical linked by regulators to contamination in nearby East Hampton drinking water wells. East Hampton Town officials pushed for the shutdown and are holding a potential lawsuit in reserve as state and county agencies pursue cleanup and continued groundwater testing.

3. An Actor's Rise, Fall, and Return (easthamptonstar.com) β East Hampton's Playwrights' Theatre is bringing a new staged reading, "The Old Marlin and the Sea," to LTV Studios in Wainscott this Saturday night, tracing actor William Farnum's dramatic rise, fall, and reinvention. With original music, historic projections, and a cast of familiar East End theater names, the production connects Hollywood lore to local history, including a legendary marlin that has long hung in the neighborhood. Tickets are available now, with higher prices on show day.

4. Poetry and Prose From a New Pushcart Collection (easthamptonstar.com) β A new Pushcart Press collection will be celebrated Friday evening at BookHampton in downtown East Hampton, where co-editors Philip Schultz and Bill Henderson will read, talk, and sign books. The hefty anthology highlights poetry and prose that small presses made possible, with Schultz, an East Hampton resident, emphasizing its wide-ranging takes on identity, politics, and truth-telling. Expect a Q&A and plenty of literary discovery.

HPU's Grubb ties for first place at Tennessee; NCSU, Wake take third (triadgolf.com) β College golf teams recently competed at Maidstone Club in East Hampton, where Wake Forest's men finished third in the Hamptons Intercollegiate behind Florida and Rutgers. While the story mainly highlights players and results from several universities, it also underscores East Hampton's role as a host for high-level collegiate golf.
