You might be in Athens climbing up to the Parthenon or in Rome waiting on line to get into the Vatican Library when you hear a voice that you recognize as "definitely from Long Island!" Isn't quite amazing how Long Islanders are everywhere?
I was first tuned into this when I married my Long Island born and raised wife. I was not, so I was amazed how she knew every town on Long Island and the best way to get to it from wherever we were. Better yet she somehow knew someone in every town, through, family, college, work etc.
Then we did some traveling as a married couple and I realized all Long Islanders seem to have the same knowledge. I can't help but giggle at the times at airports on long lines my wife and other Long Islanders began talking about places in towns all over the island they love or avoid! They 'd talk about good best pizza places and restaurants they love or avoid at all costs.
My brothers mother-law's husband owned the Scobee Diner for years and loved to travel and everywhere they went out of nowhere people would shout, "Harry!" And of course talk for a while.
My own wife who has won Best Psychic on Long Island six times has the same experience every time we go out to dinner anywhere from Bellport to Florence. My favorite was once in St. Peter's we asked someone random to take our photo and sure enough they were from Long Island one town over.
The strange thing is how when in far away places meeting fellow Long Islanders is comforting. It makes waiting on long lines in strange foreign places more bearable and sometimes fun. Good conversations make lines seem to go faster.
Then there is this, you are at a beach in Mexico and you see a person obviously not from the USA wearing a Fire Island tee-shirt or perhaps Montauk. That always makes one chuckle. Or if you are wearing some Long Island swag they come over and tell you about their visit to Jones Beach or some other Long Island tourist destination.
My Wife although from Merrick originally, but now resides in East Patchogue as do I as her husband. I have this old hat that is faded and just says Patchogue. Years back while out east three Irish tourists came up and said proudly, " We have been to "Patch - A - goo- ie!"
