Andy Cohen: I Need Uber to Be My DD in East Hampton

Town supervisor not buying it, says drunk driving shouldn't be blamed on Uber ban.

After East Hampton Town announced last Friday that Uber, a mobile app that connects people with a taxi, private car or rideshare, had suspended operations in East Hampton, a number of prominent Twitter users didn’t hold back their discontent with the decision.

Bravo TV’s Andy Cohen tweeted directly to East Hampton Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell: “I am trying to be a responsible citizen. I don’t drink & drive. Plz don’t ban my designated driver in EHampton, @uber.”

Uber says it was forced to suspend operations after the town began requiring its drivers to maintain an office in East Hampton.

Several people complained on Twitter that no Uber will mean an increase in drunk driving around town, but Cantwell says that’s non-sense.

“No one should be drunk driving,” he said. “There are many ways to avoid drinking and driving beyond Uber.”

There are 370 cabs available in the East Hampton Town, the supervisor said.

“Uber didn’t exist three years ago and people avoided drunk driving then,” he said.
