Bicyclist Ticketed After Being Struck by Car in East Hampton Village

The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon.

A bicyclist was ticketed for failing to stop at a stop sign after he was struck by a car in East Hampton Village on Thursday afternoon, according to Village Police.

The driver of the car, Jacinto Lopez-Murillo of Florida, told police he was beginning to make a right onto Main Street from Mill Hill Lane after stopping, according to the police report.

As he began to proceed, he heard a loud bang from the front of the car and felt a bump as his car travelled over something, he told police.

When he got out he realized that the bicyclist, Steven Vichinsky, of East Hampton, was partially under his car along with his bicycle, according to the report.

Lopez-Murillo and several other people helped Vichinsky from under the car and moved him to the shoulder.

Lopez-Murillo says he does not know how which direction the Vichinsky approached from before the crash, according to the report.

Vichinsky told police he was traveling northbound on the sidewalk and came to the intersection of Mill Hill Lane and Main Street where he saw the car stopped at the stop sign waiting to make a right turn, according to the report.

He began to proceed on his bike in front of the car to cross the street, under the impression that Lopez-Murillo saw him and said he even tapped the hood of the car to make him aware of his presence, according to police.

When Vichinsky was about half way in front of the car, it began to move into the the intersection knocking him down and driving over his legs and bicycle before coming to a stop, he told police.

A witness said she believes that the bicyclist was traveling down Mill Hill Lane and while approaching the car from the right side, attempted to make a left turn in front of the car before he was struck and knocked down, according to the report.
