Community Helps Man Police Say Was Hurt In 'Road Rage' Incident

The man is reportedly facing steep hospital bills and needs assistance, the GoFundMe page says.

EAST HAMPTON, NY — The community is coming together to help a man police say was hurt in a "road rage" incident in August.

"Help David," organized by Kurt Wenzel of East Hampton, has raised $10,562 of its $10,000 goal by Friday afternoon.

According to Wenzel, David Peralta, a server at Dopo La Spiaggia restaurant in East Hampton, was injured in the reported incident.

"He survived dangerous brain surgery, but was left with hospital bills approaching $100,000. Any financial relief you could offer David and his family would be a great help during an extremely difficult time. Many thanks from the Dopo family," Wenzel said.

The "road rage" incident in East Hampton led to emergency surgery for the person assaulted, police said.

Charles Harrison Streep, 31, of New York City, was arrested at an East Hampton Village home on August 27 and and charged with second degree assault and second degree strangulation, police said.

According to the East Hampton Star, Streep is the nephew of actress Meryl Streep.

East Hampton Village Police said the incident took place at 11:30 a.m. in the parking lot of Chase Bank on Main Street.

Police responded to reports of a possible fight and found a person who had sustained "serious head trauma" and needed emergency surgery, officials said. An investigation revealed that Streep had assaulted the person, police said.

Streep was arraigned by East Hampton Town Justice Steve Tekulsky and was released on $5,000 bail, police said.
