Drunk Driver Tries To Flee: Police

He reached speeds in excess of 80 miles an hour in a 40 mile per hour zone, police say.

EAST HAMPTON, NY — An East Hampton drunk driver tried to flee police, speeding 80 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone, police said.

According to East Hampton Town Police, Julian G. Maya, 40, was arrested on Saturday at 2:32 a.m. after driving north on Springs Fireplace Road, near Harrison Avenue, at a speed of 72 miles an hour and failing to keep right.

When officers activated emergency lights, Maya failed to stop and, instead, accelerated to 8o miles an hour in an attempt to flee, police said.

Upon investigation, Maya was found to have the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, bloodshot, glassy eyes, slurred speech, was unsteady on his feet, and performed poorly on all standard field sobriety tests, police said.

Maya was charged with third degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor, driving while intoxicated, first offense, a misdemeanor, and operating a motor vehicle with .08 of 1 percent alcohol or more in blood, first offense, a misdemeanor, police said.

Maya was released on his own recognizance, police said.
