East Hampton Officials Respond to Montauk Residents' Complaints

At last week's town board meeting, residents complained about the party scene in Montauk.

East Hampton Town officials are responding to residents’ complaints at last Tuesday’s board meeting regarding the recent party scene in Montauk.

Almost 300 residents attended the meeting in order to express their anger that partying in the area has reached unacceptable levels, especially during the Fourth of July weekend.

β€œIt’s gotten a reputation as a party town and that is not good,” Montauk resident Bill Akin said during the meeting. β€œIt’s not good for anything out here because everyone’s property values decline and the people who are the core of the community end up going away.”

Complaints included: public urination, noise, parking problems, and overcrowding of rental homes and bars among others.

In a Facebook post on the FIGHTING FOR MONTAUK page on Wednesday morning, Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell stated he is addressing the issues and along with Town Police Chief Michael Sarlo at the Montauk Chamber, met with Bar and Club Owners to seek cooperation on overcrowding, noise, litter and other issues.

At the next town board meeting on Tuesday, July 21, officials will discuss proposals for no parking along Edgemere Street by the Surf Lodge and a rental registry law.

At the meeting on Thursday night, a hearing date for a beach fire container law will be set.

β€œMuch more to do but I wanted to share this,” Cantwell wrote in the Facebook post.
