East Hampton Town Board Looks to Build Public Parking Lot in Montauk

The Town is looking to build a parking lot on a parcel of land they recently purchased.

The East Hampton Town Board is looking to build a public parking lot on 84 South Euclid Avenue in Montauk.

The Town purchased a parcel of land across from the local post office about four or five months ago and is now hoping to turn it into a lot due to the “lack of public parking in downtown Montauk,” according to Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell.

So far, the plans are still in the preliminary stages, but the Town has hired the firm, L.K. McLean Associates of Brookhaven, to create a design for the parking lot, according to Cantwell.

The parking lot is estimated to have about 40 to 50 parking spots and the Town is aiming to complete it before next summer.

The total cost for the project is currently estimated to be around $300,000 and Cantwell has already spoken to State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle and State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr. about applying for state funding.

Both have encouraged him to submit applications for the funding but there is still no word whether or not the Town will receive it, according to Cantwell.

However he said that both officials have ”expressed interest in helping to pay for the parking lot” and that there has been support from local residents on this project.

“I think everyone in Montauk recognizes that this is necessary,” Cantwell said. “I think this was long overdue and many people are in strong support.”

Last month, the Town voted to ban street parking nearby on part of South Edgemere Street in Montauk by a popular local bar, The Surf Lodge.
