Empowering Acts on The East End

Local trailblazers are creating a series of events to increase awareness of inclusion, diversity, & equality.

East Hampton (August 6, 2018)- This season, the East End will be known not only for star-studded events. A new series is on the rise that will be building a community filled with women that are trailblazers. The woman behind this effort to showcase the voices of the strong women in our community is Denise Keane. Coming from the world of business and law, Ms. Keane talks about diversity and inclusion as a business imperative – a community imperative – a social imperative. She mentions "My passion on this topic comes from not just thinking that diversity is the right thing to do – but knowing from first-hand experience that a diverse and inclusive environment is critical to business success."

On August 2nd, she hosted an intimate gathering at Babette's ( 66 Newtown Ln, East Hampton, NY 11937) to start a conversation to learn more about the experience and journey of our community's talented women. These women hope to create a voice around diversity and inclusion as they work to identify sustainable solutions. Sustainability is a key issue because the diversity dialogue has been a part of the conversation for decades- now is the time to harness the energy created around this issue and turn it into action. Ms. Keane stated " We have started in a small way by inviting like-minded women to share their stories. At this point, we are lawyers, artists, entrepreneurs, women who run businesses in our community and business leaders. Once the conversation starts there are so many points of similarity. The circumstances may be different, but the challenges and opportunities share an amazing similarity. Then the question becomes how do you expand the dialogue to include the larger community to hear what they have done to create a more inclusive environment and importantly what we need to do to make it a sustainable social imperative.” It is only the beginning for these ladies on the East End; their goal is to continue to create these opportunities to hear the voices of other women on a larger scale.

If you're interested in joining the conversation, the next meeting will be on August 21st, please contact Tia Greene at tia@liebepr.com
