First Installment of New Summer Baseball Camp Starts Saturday

This Saturday and Sunday, Back 2 Back Championship Baseball start up baseball camp will be leading the first of three weekend coaching and training sessions at the East Hampton ballfields at 400 Pantigo Place. 

The camp features exercises like home run derbies, batting tee practice, and soft toss pitching to teach children ages 6 to 12 the mechanics of baseball while also having fun in the sun.

The Back 2 Back staff is made up of former high school and collegiate ball players who played for the Mamaroneck Tigers during their 2008 and 2009 championship seasons. Matt McGovern, the hitting coach, was a member of the 2009 Louisville Slugger High School All-American Team, and a two-time all-state selection for New York State. 

Gabe Klein, the outfield coach, was a three-year letter winner at Hamilton college, a captain of the Continentals and was appointed to NESCAC All-Sportsmanship Team. In the summer of 2011, Klein was also a lifeguard with Pathfinder Day Camp in Montauk. 

Taylor Mondshein was a two-time NESCAC All-Academic recipient during his years at Williams College, and the team captain for their baseball program his senior year. Mondshein started at second base for the 2011 Westhampton Aviators, champions of the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League that season.

Daniel Luzzi, the pitching coach, was the captain of the 2009 Mamaroneck team, and attended Boston College following his championship senior year. In the summer of 2010, Luzzi worked as a camp counselor for 6- to 7-year-olds at Pathfinder Day Camp. 

The four are joined by their former Mamaroneck coaches, Billy Byron and Joe Glaser, as well as veteran softball instructor Michelle Ganpat.

The staff hopes to inculcate the passion and love for baseball in campers, and has partnered with the East Hampton Little League for their support. “We believe that a baseball player’s Little League years are the most critical for his or her future success,” Klein said.

When asked why Back 2 Back was coming to East Hampton, Klein said, “We have all summered in the Hamptons for years … Many of our families have rented or owned summer homes in the area for generations. We are even offering weekly scholarships for several East Hampton Little Leaguers to attend our clinics free of charge.”

Potential students are encouraged to wear athletic shorts, sneakers or cleats and a T-shirt. Back 2 Back also asks that students bring their own lunch, a baseball glove and bat, a water bottle, a batting helmet and sunscreen. A towel is also suggested, as there will be a Slip N’ Slide. 

In addition to this weekend, there will be two other weekend clinics over Aug. 17 and 18, and Aug. 24 and 25. The cost per child is $75 for one day, $120 for a weekend, or $300 for all three weekends.
