Great Horned Owl Rescued at Ross School

The owl was tangled up in a soccer net, school representatives said Thursday.

EAST HAMPTON, NY - Students at the Ross School had a surprise visitor Thursday, when an owl got tangled up in a soccer net.

Greg Drossel, assistant dean of students at Ross, rescued the owl. After he saved the owl, it was reportedly resting comfortably in a box in his office.

“One of my many duties at Ross School is the school’s naturalist. Anytime there’s a question or an issue that has anything to do with wildlife, I'm the ‘go to guy’ on campus," Drossel said. "Whether it’s a bird that flew through an open window into a classroom, a snake in one of the buildings looking for a warm place to spend the winter, a white-tailed deer with his antlers tangled in a soccer net — or, in this case, a great horned owl this morning tangled up in the net — I always manage to free the animal with minimal stress. It’s not a bad way to start a morning when you have the opportunity to save such a magnificent creature.”
