Local Bar Supports Local Brewery

Indian Wells Tavern offers up Montauk Brewing Company's Driftwood Ale.

Montauk Brewing Company's Driftwood Ale has been on tap at the Indian Wells Tavern in Amagansett for about six weeks, and its starting to catch on.

"We're selling it," Marco Marin, the bartender, said on Friday. "People don't know it yet, and sometimes I have to give them a sample first."

Though Driftwood Ale has replaced the veteran Anchor Steam — one of the oldest breweries in the country, based in San Francisco- — it doesn't quite have the following yet of more established brands.

"It's a beer drinkers beer," Marin said, "It's closest to the Sierra Nevada but it's more flavorful and stronger."

Marin, a Springs native who's been behind the bar at the Tavern for one year, was glad to support the local little guys in their entrance to the beer game. "It's great," Marin said. "I grew up with these guys. I wish them the best of luck. I'm surprised it took so long for a microbrewery to start up out here."

"In general," Marin said, "I'm just really glad they're getting out there."

Montauk Brewing, started by a trio of East Hampton High School graduates, is currently in its second season, and is available on draft at various local bars, or at their Montauk tasting room, at 62 S Erie Avenue in Montauk.
