Man Attacks Victim With Machete: Police

He struck his victim several times with a machete, police say.

EAST HAMPTON, NY — An East Hampton man was arrested after he struck his victim several times with a machete and then grabbed their cell phone so they couldn't call for help, police said.

According to East Hampton Town Police, Donald S. Hermol, 43, was arrested on August 4 at 3:03 p.m. on Accabonac Road and charged with second degree assault/intent to cause injury with weapon/instrument, a felony, second degree menacing, weapon, a misdemeanor, fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon, intent to use, a misdemeanor, second degree harassment, physical contact, a violation, and fourth degree criminal mischief, disable equipment to prevent request for emergency assistance, a misdemeanor.

Hermol struck his victim several times with the machete, "a dangerous instrument," causing an approximately 3-inch laceration and bruising to the victim's upper left arm, police said.

Hermol also punched his victim with a closed fist in the right eye, resulting in swelling and a contusion around the right eye, police said.

Then, when the victim was trying to call East Hampton Town Police, Hermol broke the phone, police said.

Cash bail was set at $1,000, police said.
