Man Stole Truck, Brought It Back, Offered Owner $5: Cops

He gave the owner a note saying he'd taken the truck, along with $5, police say.

EAST HAMPTON, NY — A Sag Harbor man was arrested after he stole a car in East Hampton Village and brought it back, along with $5 for the owner, police said.

According to East Hampton Village Police, Kevin J. Simmons, 59, was arrested on March 13 at 8:13 a.m. on Main Street and charged with third degree burglary, fourth degree criminal possession of stolen property, and second degree unauthorized use of a vehicle.

Police responded to a call about prior unauthorized use of a vehicle and possible burglarly; the owner of the vehicle said that prior to the arrival of police, he found his truck parked at a different location than its original parking space, police said.

The owner said that while he was moving the truck back to its original parking space, a man wearing black snow pants, a black hat and snow goggles approached the vehicle; Simmons allegedly gave the owner a handwritten note stating that he'd taken the truck, along with a $5 bill, police said.

The owner said he walked away from Simmons and contacted authorities, police said.

An officer located a person matching the description inside Starbucks; the owner positively identified Simmons, police said. Simmons was arrested and was transported to East Hampton Village Police Department for processing, police said.

Bail was set at $1,000, police said.
