Montauk Book Fair Offers More Than Just Good Reads

Farmers market, jewelry, plants and more help support the library.

There aren't just books at the Friends of the Montauk Library Book Fair, taking place Saturday on the Montauk Green from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

As the name implies, there will be books for sale at the 34th annual event, but Friends of the Montauk Library president Sally Krusch said, “It’s not just a place to go and shop, it’s a place to go and do things.”

Apart from donated used and new books — which will be sold both individually and by the pound — there will also be jewelry for sale and a farmers market offering fresh fruit, plants, and canned goods. Additionally, the fair will offer a children’s section with games, and a silent auction and raffle with prizes like a $100 gift certificate to a local restaurant. “All of this,” Krusch said, “came from the community.” Everything is being made possible through donations, and unpaid volunteers will staff the entire event.

The fair is the largest fundraiser for the Friends. The group funds nearly all the special projects such as the performance and music programs, knitting lessons, and the winter movie series, showing the only movies in Montauk when the hamlet's cinema shuts down for the season.
