Montauk Man Charged With Felony DWI: Police

He was caught failing to maintain his lane, police say.

EAST HAMPTON, NY — A Montauk man was slapped with a felony driving while intoxicated charge in East Hampton, police said.

According to East Hampton Town Police, Joseph A. Cronin, 55, was arrested on Dec. 3 at 11:35 p.m. on Pantigo Road near the intersection of Spring Close Highway and charged with DWI, previous conviction of designated offense within 10 years, a felony.

Cronin was driving a 1999 GMC west on Pantigo Road when he was seen failing to maintain his lane of travel multiple times, police said.

Upon contact, there was "a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, his speech was slurred, his eyes were bloodshot and glassy and and he was observed to be unsteady on his feet. He performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests," police said.

He was released into the custody of the Suffolk County Sheriff, police said.
