Montauk Teachers Association Asks For Tougher Attendance Policy

Should Montauk Public Schools adopt a tougher attendance policy?

The Montauk Teachers Association asked the Montauk School District to adopt a stricter attendance policy in a letter to the school board last week.

According to The East Hampton Star, Laura Schilling said some students often fall behind and struggle to keep up with classmates after extended vacations.

After the February or springs breaks, Montauk children, whose parents work during the summer vacation, sometimes get taken out of school for extended periods, sometimes for months, Schilling told The East Hampton Star.

According to the district’s superintendent, a student is taken off the enrollment rolls after 20 missed days of school.

The teachers association has been considering changing the policy after teachers noticed a pattern with students who go away for long periods, according to The East Hampton Star.
