Opinion: Why Montauk Is The Most Romantic Location in the USA

No matter which experts you bring in not one can definitively disprove that Montauk is the most romantic location in the USA. So let's list the reasons why it is.

1) Montauk has always had the reputation as sort of a "there are no rules," type of place. Fishermen, tourists, summer renters, and locals are known to be a touch more aggressive in enjoying life when standing on the peninsula that is Montauk. The End, the last stop, the place is a destination for folks who want to get away from it all.

2) If you look at the number of motel/hotel rooms in Montauk and do the math lots of couples are enjoying the beauty of the area during the summer. But one may argue the same is true in South Beach, FL or any other ocean resort town. The difference is at the moment Montauk is the destination. The fact Leonardo DiCaprio and his posse makes a point of getting there as much as possible in the summer must mean something. The energy is alive with promise.

3) The place is naturally romantic. The ocean, the bluffs, the sunrises, the sunsets, the full moon, quarter moons, crescent moons and the unbelievable stars. I once did a piece for the now defunct Montauk Pioneer listing all sorts of government statistics on how Montauk skies are the darkest on the East Coast and the best spot for looking at stars. When I lived at Ditch Plains I spent many nights in the dead of winter walking the beach just staring into the heavens knowing there was so much one could never know about the universe. Believe me being under the Montauk night sky has a power to stir up the most romantic passions.

4) You cannot downplay the expertise of the bartenders and waitresses of the many establishments of Montauk who add to the buzz. When they serve of a breakfast, lunch they do it with a certain panache. They have a certain energy that lets you know you are in the best place to be. No doubt eating fresh fish, indulging in great mixed drinks and quality wines prepares the mind and soul for great romance.

5) Almost everyone feels better thus looks better when they are in Montauk. Women put flowers in their hair, guys shine, too. I can personally attest that when folks are in Montauk, they smile, more, laugh harder and are nicer. This creates an energy that gets transformed into sheer romantic bliss.

6) Finally romance in Montauk just feels better, more magical, more infused with a power I just can't explain.
