Lee Zeldin Wins House Race Over Bishop

The former state senator has defeated incumbent Tim Bishop.

Lee Zeldin is heading to Congress.

The Republican, a former state senator, knocked off Democratic incumbent Tim Bishop in the 1st Congressional District race, according to unofficial results from the Suffolk Board of Elections.

With all election districts reporting, Zeldin led Bishop by a margin of 89,564-73,860.

“Tonight Long Island voters sent a clear message to Washington that the status quo is totally unacceptable to us, and that we want a better path forward for America,” Zeldin said in a statement after the results came in. ”I wish Congressman Tim Bishop well following twelve years of important service to the residents of the First Congressional District.”
