MONTAUK, NY — Seven people were saved from a sinking boat off the coast of Montauk Sunday, according to the United States Coast Guard.

The U.S. Coast Guard Station Montauk posted on their Facebook page about the rescue. The station received a call at 10:35 a.m. Sunday over VHF Channel 16 of a vessel taking on water in the vicinity of Montauk Point, the post said.

The station launched a 47' motor lifeboat at 10:40 a.m. and arrived on scene to find the vessel mostly underwater and a Good Samaritan helping the people on the vessel onto their boat, the post added.

The seven people from the Good Samaritan’s vessel were transferred onto the Coast Guard's vessel, which also picked up anything that had floated off the sunken boat.

"This reminds us of how quickly a situation can turn bad," the USCG said. "We hope everyone has working bilge pumps and checks them regularly. Thank you to the captain and crew of the Good Samaritan vessel who assisted us this morning."
