Sag Harbor eighth-graders are on a mission to collect books and school supplies for fellow students at Theodore Roosevelt Middle School in Kenner, Louisiana, who suffered the affects of Hurricane Katrina.

The Louisiana students have a brand-new school after their school was damaged by the 2005-hurricane, but their classroom is missing essentials, including books and school supplies.

In an effort to help, Sag Harbor Middle School students started a drive in October and have been collecting books of all kinds, which they will ship to Louisiana.

To date, they have collected more than 600 books, but before they post mark them, they aim to collect supplies, including pens, pencils and notebooks to include in the package.

The drive got underway, according to Christine Farrell, an ELA teacher at Sag Harbor Middle School, when Katy Clayton, a teacher at Theodore Roosevelt Middle School and former student of Sag Harbor Superintendent of Schools Katy Graves reached out for help.

“We have decided to adopted her class as a service learning project,” said Ms. Farrell, adding that her students were especially compelled to help after experiencing the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
