So What's With This Weather?

It just hasn't been a great weather Spring at all!

Fog, wind, rain, drizzle, high winds, low temperatures is not a recipe for fun on a day off, week off, summer off and for that matter even going to work. Down at the Montauk Commercial dock someone said, "Trump said global warming is bull, and now he's backing up his words." Of course he was joking, but the truth is 2017 "season" has not been record breaking for restaurant covers, waiters tips, folks swimming at the ocean beaches or even coffee sales at Starbucks.

For many east end folks those facts means must needed money is not being earned. Although it is early in the season playing, catch up is never as much fun as "already having a record year!" On the other hand some locals are glad, happy that the less than favorable weather is keeping the citidiots away in droves. Millennials with all their apps and smart devices move like the weather. With limited resources they will not gamble with their money. They stay home, and perhaps play high tech video games in their parents basements.

The helicopter crowd on the other hand can use their private jets and wing down to South Beach or wherever their winter getaways are. Even the helicopter/private jet volume is not at its usual pitch this year. Yet the stock market is up so high it is almost causing the nose bleeds abusive cocaine use used to bring on. However for whatever reason high price rentals on the east end are flat and there are plenty of rental deals available.

One sailing buddy is calling the whole situation Trump fatigue. His theory is everyone is staring at devices for the next move of the high stakes political drama going down in DC hourly. As for the weather? No one is really happy . Sunshine, warm water, and warmer temperatures make more folks happier than , cold nasty unseasonal winds and constant rain, not so much. It's not good for recreational fishing either.Even gardeners are behind on cutting grass and trimming hedges due to bad weather. One funny thing is calls to the pool guys are down, no one is in the homes to know if the pool heaters are even working.

I remember a few years back the weather in late August was 20 degrees lover than usual, the east end was at half speed, now we seem to be having that kind of June. One thing is for certain, no one is talking drought and not too many cars are covered with sandy dust. I am only writing this because I can't sail today. In fact over the last 16 years that I have sailing Gardiner's Bay this 2017 season has been the least amount of quality sailing I have been able to do. There even seems to be less luxury yachts in Sag Harbor. I hope all this changes but the forecast for this week is like Patch's Ryan Bonner's dream, that is all sorts of bad weather alerts and notices of flash floods, high winds, and bad fog.
